AMS Computing Facilities at CERN

The AMS Computing Facility provides computing facilities for users of the AMS (Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer) Experiment at CERN . The facilities range from general computing facilities, software development facilities, data management facilities. Questions and requests concerning AMS computing at CERN send to AMS Computing Support

General Computing Facilities

Accounts and access to the computers
To get account(s) on CERN general purpose computers (lxplus, NICE, etc) and/or AFS one should send mail to AMS support computing Please, note account will be given only if one is registered by CERN User's Office.
To get an account on AMS machines, send e-mail to AMS support computing (if you are not in AMS namelist please ask your institute contact to send the e-mail with confirmation).
To subscribe to AMS mail list at CERN and to receive notifications about meetings and major events send e-mail to Laurence Barrin (Laurence.Barrin@cern.ch)
E-mail and printing services are provided by CERN IT division (in case of questions/problems send mail to mail.support@cern.ch, printer.support@cern.ch).

AMS AFS cell

AMS AFS cell (/afs/ams.cern.ch) is setup (Nov 2002). Most of the recent testbeam and MC files are there. If you want to put your files to /afs/ams.cern.ch send e-mail to V.Choutko and A.Klimentov (pcamsf2 and pcamsf4 are AMS AFS servers).

AMS LSF Confguration

AMS LSF has been setup (Sep 2008) following CERN Batch Facility. guidelines.

CASTOR storage and archiving

CERN Castor storage and archiving There is AMS dedicated space on CERN storage system (aka CASTOR ). Data taken during traker test beam (automn 2002) are stored on CASTOR. The recent tests showed the poor CASTOR performance (0.5 MB/sec) for ROOT style analysis, though CASTOR is a good solution to archive a bulk of data.

Archiving and Personal Backups

IT division daily backups user's AFS directories. ( /afs/cern.ch/ubackup ), IT offers a tool (ADSM) to archive users files on daily basis. AMS directories are backuped monthly, the scratch disks (/scratchA, /scratchB and /scratchM) do NOT backuped. ( Tape's Catalog )

AMS SW CVS Repositary

    AMS DAQ and onboard SW
  • repositary is setup on ams.cern.ch ( tree /amsdat1/online/cvsroot ), please contact X.Cai or A.Kunin to get write access.
  • DAQ SoftWare Repositary

    Software Development Facility

Software Development facilities consists of a set of supported hardware and software that are made available for code development to users.

Officially maintained and supported platforms are Digital Alpha, Intel Pentium and AMD. AMS code runs also on IBM (AIX V4) and HP (see Software management Page)
CERN software can be found in /cern
ROOT is available from /offline/root/'platform' (Linux, OSF1) . Root@AMS page
In addition to providing platforms for code development, the Software Development facilities define and provide a standard reference code development . Offsite computer facilities can duplicate the development environment by importing the environment from the AMS Computers (contact Vitali Choutko). To get more information about C++ and CERN Libraries click here

    AMS MC Software

For AMS Simulation Software overview click here , use AMS MC02 User and Cite Registration Forms to be registered as MC02 User. To check MC production status and submit MC production jobs go to MC production page .

    LHC++ components

To get more information about LHC++ click here . OpenGL (Mesa 3.0) is installed on ams.cern.ch.

    Data Management Facility

The Data Management Facility is designed to manage the data that are taken during STS-91 flight and tests at CERN PS and GSI, as well as ntuples produced by production team. At the core of the system is the Server which is a collection of disks, computers, and tape robots. AMS private 1 GBit/s ethernet segment (hrdl) are used to share disks with data and ntuples between machines via NFS. CERN AFS is used for user's home directories, ASIS (Application Software Information Service) and cernlib. AMS AFS (/afs/ams.cern.ch) is used for AMS02 MC ntuples and offline software.

Information about data taken during STS-91 flight, GSI test beam and CERN test beam can be found in /offline/runs_STS91.log, /offline/runs_GSI.log and /offline/runs_CERN.log. The summary files for those periods are /offline/runs_STS91_Sum.log, /offline/runs_GSI_Sum.log and /offline/runs_CERN_Sum.log.\\
Links to the runs with RAW data can be found in /offline/RunsDir
to get information about runs /offline/scripts/getrun [info] , where [info] is a string you want to search for

Links to available ntuples are located in /offline/ntuples, /offline/ntuples.s, /offline/ntuples.he , to find ntuples for the particular run execute /offline/scripts/getntuple [run] , where [run] is a run number.

Use Database query form to retrieve information about runs and MC subsets. The description of database catalogues is available here .

AMS-01 Slow Control and Housekeeping data can be found in /hedat0/SlowDir/SRDL

Data transferring to offsite computers is forbidden.

User's directories are backuped daily by central CERN service. ALL AMS data has tape copies. There are no backups for scratch disks. AMS software is backuped daily by dedicated cron job.
